Scope of services:
I provide full spectrum vocational services for people on the autism spectrum including autism spectrum disorder, Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Stated, Asperger Syndrome, and all disabilities such as Attention Deficit (Hyper-activity) Disorder, and central processing disorder or auditory processing disorder. I am located in the Tuscon, Arizona area.
Types of services:
Services begin with a thorough and individualized vocational assessment and document review. This includes an extensive work history during which I identify strengths, weaknesses, skills, aptitudes, capabilities, interests and special interests or passions.
This is followed by an assessment of barriers to employment and vocational disabilities and their severity. Barriers to employment include more than the disability—and maybe include such things as lack of transportation.
Vocational exploration with the person on the spectrum, perhaps including trusted associates or family members, identifies appropriate work—that is work that is within the individual’s current ability, aptitudes and interests. If the individual aspires to a more advance vocation than they are currently able to perform at a competitive level we build a long term plan for achieving this step by step, including any necessary training, education, work experience. If appropriate I perform a computerized job match based on vocational, aptitude, educational, social, communication, sensory, and personality factors similar or related to the methods used by The Social Security Administration and Veterans Administration. These are far more precise than those used by career counselors or job coaches. It allows access to standard vocational resources in a far more precise manner than similar work performed by special education teachers.
Job preparation and job placement, or refer the individual out to other agencies that specialize in these services in your local area follow. After an employer is identified, but prior to placement I may recommend an on-site job analysis to determine the current work demands and requirements that specifically impact the individual. Typically these include social , communication, executive function, and sensory demands and natural supports and allies within the organization.
Follow up services may include providing support and information to supervisors, and co-workers, intervention and assistance if difficulties arise.
